Overseas Recalls Warn of Problems in Cars Sold in U.S.

Kevin Faulk March 6, 2015

We all know that brakes are important.

So is the ability to steer, working airbags, and having a vehicle that does not catch on fire.

However, the New York Times recently found that manufacturers may not value this as much as the people who purchase their products in America do.

The Times found that car manufacturers had failed to issue recalls in the United States that had been issued overseas. In other cases, manufacturers knew of problems but waited years before issuing recalls in the United States.

How Does This Affect You?

When a vehicle is brought in for warranty repair, the customer is frequently told that whatever is concerning them is “normal” or “functioning as intended.” Please remember that this does not mean that there is not a problem. Even if they tell you that nothing is wrong, you don’t have to accept that. The manufacturers frequently fail to see problems, even when they themselves acknowledge they exist overseas.

In order to get a more honest answer, do some research. Take your car to another dealership or to an auto repair shop that’s known to be reputable and get their opinion. Search the internet to see if this car has been recalled overseas. Prepare yourself with more background knowledge to get the best outcome.
