They Don’t Intend to Deceive You, but They’ll Take Advantage

In November 2011, a Honda Motors employee realized that they were not providing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with the appropriate numbers regarding collisions and fatalities in Honda vehicles.
In September 2014, Honda decided that it should do something about that problem. Still, Honda did not provide accurate reports. Finally, after consumer organizations began attacking them, Honda took corrective action. On January 8, 2015, the NHTSA announced that Honda would be fined $70 million for its failure to report properly.
Honda, in response to these reports, stressed that it did not intend to break the law.
You, the consumer, will find that car manufacturers and dealerships will never tell you that they intend to break the law. They would never tell you that they mean to lie to you or defraud you. They are brimful with the best of intentions.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that they will actually stop breaking the law, lying to you, or defrauding to you. Or maybe they’ll just take a few years to get it done.
Remember, no matter how nice, personable, and reasonable the individual you are talking to is, there is every chance in the world that the business, by whatever means, wants to take advantage of you.
